Pada saat itu seluruh bumi itu memiliki satu bahasa dan logat yang sama

Genesis 11:6

TUHAN berkata Lihat Mereka ini adalah satu bangsa dan mereka memakai bahasa yang sama dan ini baru awal dari yang dapat mereka lakukan Mulai sekarang segala yang mereka rencanakan untuk dilakukan tidak ada yang tidak terlaksana

Ayo Kita turun dan mengacaukan bahasa mereka supaya mereka tidak dapat memahami satu sama lain

Karena itu tempat itu disebut Babel karena di sana TUHAN mengacaukan bahasa seluruh bumi dan dari tempat itu TUHAN mencerai-beraikan mereka ke seluruh muka bumi
